ATC was founded in the early 2000s as a spin-off company of the former oil & gas company Frames.

The business plan confirmed a strong market need to introduce a compact ¼ turn valve actuator to the upstream oil & gas industry, suitable both for surface and sub-surface applications.

To successfully launch this, the design had to be revolutionary – more compact – than any other actuator types available at that time and to be able to provide a considerably higher reliability and better efficiency. Overall, it had to contribute to a better CAPEX & OPEX and had to be advantageous while introducing to the oil & gas companies during the first rounds of introductions and in obtaining subsequent approvals (AVL) consequently.

Looking at the developments of the oil & gas facilities over the past 5 decades, one can conclude a continuous increase in production outputs (rated at bbl/day) and in the subsequent valve and pipe-run design & operational pressures up to API 15.000 and 20.000 ratings to-date.

At the same time, considering that the design criteria of particularly larger scaled production facilities, like FPS (Floating Production Systems, like FPSO’s) are more and more subject to advanced standardisation for various reasons, such as material sourcing optimization, while maintaining efficient supply chain management and keeping CAPEX under control. As a direct result, hull designs are more and more constrained and the dimensional envelope of the subsequent process facilities (topsides) and mooring systems (e.g. riser and manifold productions lines) are very much restricted and subject to space constraints.

It is the combination of increased production volumes, and higher pressures against an advanced need for standardisation of FPS-system designs (hull & topsides), which drives the requirement to use compact type equipment and to standardise on this solution by the leading companies in this challenging upstream sector.

Derived from the above-described market need, ATC was born by a group of highly experienced entrepreneurs from the oil & gas industry in the early days of this century, introducing a revolutionary actuation innovation to the market, the ATC helical slot type actuator.

After extensive type-testing, against the highest offshore specifications & standards, in the first 5 years of existence, ATC introduced the following actuator types:

• ATC Hydraulic compact
• ATC Pneumatic compact
• ATC Subsea for shallow water applications (diver-based)
• ATC Subsea for deep water applications (ROV-based)

Following the early days of the company, as the original helical slot type actuator inventor, the ATC organisation developed into a matured market leader providing compact valve actuation & associated control systems & solutions. Over the years, ATC has built an impressive track record of executing numerous large scale type projects.
